Born in West Virginia, Katherine Johnson’s work calculated and analysed the flight paths of spacecrafts; calculating the trajectory for the first American space flight. She also calculated the launch window for the 1961 Mercury landing. Despite the barriers she faced for being an African American woman she always made sure she was included in meetings and her knowledge of analytic geometry made her invaluable at NASA.
